Neal Casal Memorial Concert, Sept 25 2019

In August of 2019, the world lost Neal Casal, guitarist / singer / songwriter, whose many achievements include a dozen solo albums; playing with the Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, and more; creating the bespoke setbreak music for 2015’s “Fare Thee Well” Grateful Dead reunion shows in Santa Clara and Chicago and then touring with the group formed around the music, Circles Around the Sun; and many more.

On September 25, 2019, MusicCares organized a memorial benefit concert in Neal’s memory, with a long list of musicians coming together to perform both Neal’s tunes and some of his favorite songs by others.

JamBase’s article has a rundown of the songs and artists involved, including much of JRAD:

[G]uitarist Eric Krasno stepp[ed] into Casal’s role with Circles Around The Sun, joining drummer Mark Levy , bassist Dan Horne and keyboardist Adam MacDougall for a lengthy rendition of “On My Mind.” Drummer Joe Russo then joined CATS for a collaborative tune.

Metzger went solo acoustic for a cover of Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.” He was then joined by Russo, guitarist Tom Hamilton , bassist Dave Dreiwitz and MacDougall on keys for the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River.” Joe Russo’s Almost Dead with MacDougall in place of Marco Benevento then covered “Playing In The Band” with Ryan Adams & The Cardinals’ “Let It Ride” performed within.

RIP Neal, we miss you!
